Contracts.

An agency contract decides who controls your work, your money and your exit. Here's what a fair one says.

Commission, and what it's taken from

The contract should state the commission as a percentage and say what it's calculated on. "Gross" means everything fans paid, before the platform takes its fee. "Net" means what the platform actually pays you. A 40% commission on gross can cost you far more than 40% of what you receive. Try the calculator to see the difference.

Also check how tips, messages and custom content are treated, and whether any other costs, like ads, editing or chatting, are deducted on top.

How long you're tied in

Under the Above Board Standard, you can leave after at most six months, on no more than 60 days' notice, with no penalty beyond commission already earned. Watch for automatic renewals, very long notice periods and "termination fees".

Your content and your face

Your content should stay yours. Any licence the agency has should end when the contract ends. Be very careful with "perpetual", "irrevocable" or "worldwide, in any media" rights, and with any right to make AI-generated or digital-replica versions of your face, body or voice. You should be asked separately, in writing, for each use.

Exclusivity and non-competes

Exclusivity on one platform can be reasonable. Exclusivity on every platform, or a ban on working with anyone else after you leave, is a red flag, and may not be enforceable where you live.

Gagging clauses

Confidentiality is normal. A clause that stops you speaking to a lawyer, a regulator or Above Board, or from saying anything negative about the agency, is not.
