Know your rights / Webcam studios

Webcam studios: what a fair deal looks like.

A studio deal covers your money, your time and your safety. Here is what to look for in each, and what to ask before you start.

Your money

  • A percentage in writing, and what it is calculated on.
  • A payout schedule: how often you are paid, and the statement behind each payment.
  • No hidden deductions: rent, equipment, “fines” or fees should be listed up front.

Your contract

  • A written contract in a language you understand, given to you before you start.
  • The term, the notice you must give and any penalty for leaving.
  • Who the registered company is.

Your safety and freedom

  • You can leave when you decide, without losing your documents or money owed.
  • The studio does not hold your passport or ID.
  • Private spaces stay private, and you know who has access to rooms and recordings.
  • You can refuse a client or a request.

Questions to ask

  1. What is the registered company name and address?
  2. What is the percentage and what is it calculated on?
  3. When am I paid?
  4. What are all the costs I would pay?
  5. How do I leave, and what happens to money owed to me?

Questions

What percentage should a webcam studio pay?
We do not publish a standard rate because we cannot source one. Compare offers on the same basis, with every other charge included.
Is it normal for a studio to keep my documents?
No. A studio should not hold your passport or ID as a condition of working there.
Where can I get help if a studio is treating me badly?
Keep records, speak to someone you trust, and you can report confidentially to Above Board. Local worker or legal support organisations can also help.
